The History Behind the Print: 'Jasmine'
Designed by William Morris in 1872, Jasmine is a defining example of his genius for translating real garden plants into repeating flat patterns. Inspired by the heavily scented jasmine growing directly along the walls of his home, Morris layered a delicate foreground trail of scrolling jasmine over a densely woven background of native English hawthorn leaves and blossoms. Initially block-printed using 11 separate woodblocks in distemper colours, it beautifully demonstrates his master skill at completely disguising where a pattern repeats.
